Why Websites are Like Business Cards

With the growth of business worldwide, companies have been looking for ways to advertise their businesses. Society has looked to the internet to perform business operations because it has become a way of life for our nation. With the plethora of information available on the internet, and the large audience that can be targeted through the online world, websites have literally become “online business cards.”

The twenty-first century has brought a society that relies on the internet to get most of their information. Whether it be looking up a restaurant or a business, the internet has all the information we need to obtain. Almost all websites have a “contact” tab somewhere on their website which serves as a business card for many companies. The website connected to this contact information is an advertisement for the business. This large growth in advertising and the internet bring us to the term “business card websites.” So what are they?

“The term ‘business card website’ has become widely associated with the popular style of website that has cropped up on the personal domains of designers and developers” (line25.com). This creative approach has become a new way of providing personal and contact information as well as links to other similar sites. The online world offers consumers and business owners the information they need through websites. This not only provides an interactive approach to getting information, it also grants more space for an overview of a company. With the rise of the twenty-first century, physical business cards have become links on the internet.

As an example, my previous manager at Remax Realty referred clients to a website instead of giving them a business card. Not only does a website provide the information from a business card, it provides other links that benefit the company and consumer alike. To find a Remax location closer to the consumer, you can enter a zip code. To find out more about houses on the market, you can enter information about where you wish to live. To find out more about joining the company, you can click on the link “become an agent.” Quite clearly, a website is a business card and more.

The internet has grown so fast because businesses and consumers rely on it to get information. Websites have literally become online business cards because they are a great way to target an audience. They also contain the necessary information to the consumer as well as other links to becoming more knowledgeable. Websites are an advertisement, a business card, to consumers and businesses alike.
